Zhanqiao Pier is Qingdao's historic 440-meter jetty, offering a walk through colonial-era China with iconic Huilan Pavilion views, best visited at dawn to avoid crowds.
Go at dawn (before 7 AM) to have the pier nearly to yourself—the light is perfect for photos and the gates lock by 6 PM. Skip the horse-drawn carriage; instead, stand on the west side sea wall for the classic postcard view of the pier with the old town behind. For a unique reverse perspective, take a 5-yuan (about $0.70) ferry to Little Qingdao island, a 15-minute walk away.
Open 24 hours, but gates lock at approximately 6 PM in summer and 4:30 PM in winter; best accessed 6:30 AM - 8 AM or 4 PM - 5:30 PM.
