The Bund is Shanghai's iconic waterfront promenade where colonial-era architecture meets futuristic skyscrapers—a free, open-air museum that captures the city's dramatic history and modern ambition. Best visited in spring or autumn, especially at sunset for the light show.
Beat the crowds by visiting before 8 AM or after 9 PM; the best photo spot is at the north end near the Waibaidu Bridge, not the central area. Skip the overpriced Huangpu River cruise (CNY 120–200) unless you want a boat view—walking the promenade is the real experience. For free restrooms and a break, step into the Fairmont Peace Hotel lobby or the Shanghai History Museum.
