The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is Xi'an's iconic Tang Dynasty Buddhist tower, built to house scriptures brought from India by the monk Xuanzang. Climb its 248 steps for panoramic views and immerse yourself in 1,300 years of history.
Go at opening time (8:00 AM in summer, 8:30 AM in winter) to beat the crowds. For a classic photo, head to the southeast corner of the temple grounds at sunset to capture the pagoda reflected in the lotus pond. Carry small cash (10 CNY notes) for incense and water inside.
