February remains cold, though temperatures slowly begin to rise toward the end of the month. Snow is still possible, and the city is often quiet except during Chinese New Year, when domestic travel surges.
Warm winter clothing is essential: a heavy coat, layers, gloves, hat, and scarf. Waterproof boots are helpful if snow is expected.
Chinese New Year brings massive crowds to temples and fairs, and many businesses close for a week. Book trains and hotels well in advance if traveling during the holiday.
