January is Chongqing's coldest month, with cool, damp conditions and frequent fog. While temperatures rarely drop below freezing, the lack of central heating and high humidity make it feel chilly. It's a low season for tourism, but you can enjoy hotpot and indoor attractions without large crowds.
Pack warm layers, including thermal underwear, a heavy coat, and a scarf. Waterproof shoes are essential due to frequent drizzle and fog. Bring an umbrella and a portable humidifier if you're sensitive to dampness.
Chinese New Year may fall in January or February, causing travel peaks and closures. Check dates and book transport early. Many small restaurants close during the holiday, but major attractions remain open.
