February remains cold and damp, though temperatures slowly begin to rise toward the end of the month. Plum blossoms start to appear, offering a hint of spring. Tourist crowds are still low except during Chinese New Year, when domestic travel spikes.
Bring warm, waterproof clothing, including a coat, sweaters, and sturdy shoes. An umbrella is a must for frequent drizzle, and a compact camera is great for early blossoms.
Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival bring vibrant decorations but also huge crowds at temples and scenic spots. Book trains and hotels well in advance. Many shops and restaurants close for several days during the holiday.
