October is peak autumn foliage season, with stunning colors and crisp air. However, the first week is Golden Week, a major Chinese holiday, causing extreme crowds and high prices. After the holiday, it's still beautiful but less crowded. It's a prime time to visit for scenery.
Warm layers: sweater, fleece, and a jacket for cooler evenings. Comfortable walking shoes. Rain gear for occasional showers. Camera for fall colors.
Avoid Golden Week if you dislike crowds; if you must go, book everything months in advance. After the 7th, crowds diminish significantly. Expect cold nights; bring warm clothing.
