January is Suzhou's coldest month, with chilly days and occasional frost or light snow. The classical gardens are quiet and atmospheric, but the cold and dampness can be biting. It's a good time for indoor cultural sights and fewer crowds.
Pack warm layers, a heavy coat, hat, gloves, and a scarf. Waterproof shoes are useful for damp days, and a thermos or hand warmers can help with the chill.
Chinese New Year can fall in January or February, causing transport and hotel surges; book well ahead if traveling then. Many small shops and restaurants close for several days around the holiday. Expect cold, damp indoor spaces, as central heating is uncommon.
