January is the coldest month in Huangshan, with freezing temperatures and occasional snow, creating stunning winter scenery of snow-covered pines and sea of clouds. It's a good time for photography and avoiding crowds, but be prepared for icy trails and cold winds.
Pack heavy winter clothing including thermal layers, a down jacket, waterproof and insulated boots, gloves, hat, and scarf. Bring crampons for icy paths and a windproof outer layer.
Trails can be icy and some facilities may be closed; check weather forecasts and cable car operations in advance. Chinese New Year may bring crowds if it falls in January, so book accommodations early.
