January is Chengdu's coldest month, with chilly, damp days and rare frost. Skies are often overcast, and sunshine is scarce. It's a good time for indoor cultural attractions and hotpot, but not ideal for outdoor sightseeing.
Pack warm layers, a heavy coat, and thermal underwear. Bring an umbrella or rain jacket, and waterproof shoes for damp streets. A scarf and gloves are useful for chilly evenings.
Chinese New Year may fall in January or February, causing transport and hotel shortages—book early if traveling then. Many small restaurants close for the holiday. Expect cold, damp conditions, so dress warmly.
