January is deep winter in Lhasa, with cold, dry, and sunny days. Daytime temperatures can feel pleasant in the sun, but nights are bitterly cold. Tourist crowds are very low, making it a quiet time to visit if you can handle the chill.
Pack heavy winter clothing: thermal layers, a down jacket, insulated gloves, a warm hat, and a scarf. Sunscreen and sunglasses are essential due to strong high-altitude UV rays, even in winter. Bring lip balm and moisturizer to combat dryness.
Many restaurants and shops may have reduced hours due to the cold and Tibetan New Year. Altitude sickness can be more challenging in winter, so acclimatize slowly. Dress in layers as temperatures fluctuate greatly between sun and shade.
